      PDQ’s Innovative 5P Exit Device

Exit device being tested with a pressure gage to make sure it opens with 5 pounds of force or less.

For facilities prioritizing accessible and user-friendly design, PDQ’s 6300 & 6400 Series Exit Devices set a new benchmark. Featuring the innovative 5 Pound Push (5P), these exit devices require minimal force to operate, ideal for individuals with limited strength, including elderly users, children, and those with disabilities.

Engineered with precision, the 5P feature aligns with California’s rigorous accessibility standards (CBC-2022 section 11B-309.4) but also reflects PDQ's unwavering commitment to advancing inclusivity in public and private spaces.

PDQ has upgraded its already user-friendly 6300/6400 exit devices with a 5P option, exceeding industry accessibility standards and meeting California’s stringent regulatory requirements.

The Need for Accessible Exit Solutions

In public spaces, easy-to-use exit devices are essential for ensuring safety and accessibility for everyone, particularly in emergencies. Effective exit solutions allow all individuals, regardless of physical ability, to exit buildings quickly and safely.

To promote inclusivity, regulations such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the California Building Code (CBC) mandate that exit devices meet specific low-force requirements.

PDQ’s innovative 5P feature is specifically engineered to comply with these crucial requirements, providing a seamless experience for all users, including those with limited strength or mobility.

By minimizing the physical effort needed to operate exit devices, PDQ enhances accessibility, ensuring that every individual can navigate emergency situations with confidence.

This commitment to creating accessible solutions not only meets legal standards but also reflects a broader dedication to fostering inclusive environments in public spaces. In doing so, PDQ sets a benchmark for safety and usability in exit hardware.

      Compliance with ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Standards

The ANSI/BHMA A156.3 standards set stringent guidelines for exit devices, ensuring their reliability and safety in commercial spaces.

Specifically, Section 9.2.1 mandates that these devices operate with a maximum push force of 15 pounds, promoting accessibility for individuals of all abilities.

Manufacturers, including PDQ, must undergo rigorous testing by organizations like Intertek to verify compliance with these standards. This thorough evaluation not only confirms adherence to the specified push force limits but also ensures overall performance, reinforcing the quality and reliability of PDQ’s exit solutions.

Testing and Results of PDQ’s 6300 & 6400 Exit Devices

PDQ Industries recently conducted a rigorous evaluation of its 6300 and 6400 Series Exit Devices in compliance with ANSI/BHMA A156.3-2020 standards, as documented in Intertek’s letter report (No. 105979123MID-001) issued on October 4, 2024.

The testing took place at PDQ’s facility in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, under controlled conditions and was witnessed by Intertek representative Mark Harrison. This assessment focused on measuring the force required to retract the latches of the exit devices.

Results demonstrated that all tested models—the 6300R/6400R, 6300C/6400C, and 6300V/6400V—successfully released with less than 5-pounds of force applied at any point along the length of the touch bar.

This performance confirms compliance with both ADA-2010 section 309.4 and CBC-2022 section 11B-309.4 accessibility standards.

Notably, PDQ’s vertical exit devices excel in functionality, as it allows for a 5 lbf push on both the top and bottom rods, whereas competitors typically only achieve this on the top rod. This distinctive feature underscores PDQ's commitment to providing accessible solutions that enhance safety for all users.

Benefits of the 5P Accessibility Device

PDQ’s 6300/6400 Series exit devices are designed to enhance safety and usability by allowing operation with minimal force. The addition of the 5P accessibility device enables PDQ to meet California’s stricter regulatory requirements for exit devices.

This lower push force reduces physical strain, particularly benefiting individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and those with limited strength.

For facility managers, this innovation translates into reduced liability risks and improved compliance with federal and state accessibility codes, ensuring that their facilities meet legal standards.

Additionally, the ease of use fosters greater user satisfaction, as occupants feel more secure knowing they can operate exit devices effortlessly, ultimately creating a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.
